GeneralModi and Trump Discuss Trade and Defense Amid New Tariff Laws

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Wednesday to discuss trade, defense, energy, and critical technologies. This was their first phone conversation since the American President signed a law allowing tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries like India and China for importing Russian energy. The previous call between the two leaders took place in April following a fragile ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran over the war in West Asia. Following the conversation, Modi stated that they reviewed bilateral cooperation and agreed to maintain close engagement for their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, while also exchanging views on regional and international issues. A statement from the Prime Minister's Office confirmed these details and noted that Modi is expected to travel to the US for the G20 leaders' summit in December. Before that visit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to travel to India in the third week of October.

External Affairs

The phone call followed remarks made on Monday by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York. Jaishankar stated that the two sides have reached a point where there is more or less an understanding on a trade agreement, though he noted the complex nature of the negotiations given that India is a society of small agricultural producers and small factories. He also flagged terrorism originating from Pakistan as a key concern for India, warning that a lack of full appreciation for this issue by the US impacts bilateral relations.

Context

India and the United States maintain a broad strategic and commercial partnership that spans defense supplies, technology sharing, and diplomatic coordination on global forums. However, economic and energy policies occasionally create friction, particularly regarding India's energy imports from Russia and ongoing negotiations over bilateral trade terms.
