Indian equities finished a volatile trading session lower on Wednesday, extending losses for a third straight day and concluding a bruising September. The Nifty 50 fell 95.75 points, or 0.42 percent, to close at 22,620.45, marking its lowest finish in about six months. Meanwhile, the Sensex slipped 48.78 points, or 0.07 percent, to settle at 72,480.29, cushioned by gains in banking heavyweights.

Market Movements

Indices initially rose in early trade as crude oil prices eased and bets on further United States Federal Reserve rate hikes cooled. However, heavy selling in pharmaceutical, metal, and consumer durable shares erased those intraday gains. Healthcare emerged as the biggest drag with a 2.35 percent drop. For the entire month of September, the Nifty lost about six percent, weighed down by high crude prices, rising bond yields, and heavy foreign selling. Market breadth remained mildly negative, with 1,740 stocks advancing, 1,813 declining, and 132 unchanged.

Sectoral Trends

While sectors like media, realty, and both private and public sector banks provided support, the broader technical setup remains bearish. The Nifty 50 closed below all key moving averages, continuing its pattern of lower highs and lower lows. Concurrently, Nifty Bank gained 373.10 points, or 0.69 percent, to close at 54,633.05 after strong buying emerged from lower levels, though profit-taking near the session high trimmed those advances.
