Deal Overview
The model will be trained to interpret circuit descriptions written in a code‑like language and to plan the placement of billions of transistors on silicon. OpenAI’s system will learn to operate Synopsys’ design tools, aiming to cut weeks or months from development cycles, said co‑founder Greg Brockman in a video. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi said the deal will not cannibalize its existing business and will add value for customers. Ghazi told Reuters that OpenAI will pay a subscription fee for training on Synopsys tools and that revenue will be shared when customers use the AI‑assisted product.
Market Reaction
The company now expects a 15% revenue growth for fiscal 2027, above the 11.19% analyst forecast, according to LSEG data. Shares jumped as much as 7% after the announcement. The AI‑generated designs will still be verified by Synopsys’ traditional simulation tools to ensure physical correctness, Ghazi explained.
Context
AI assistance in chip design promises faster cycles and lower costs, but engineers must still rely on proven verification methods to guarantee that chips work as intended.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Synopsys and OpenAI agreed to create GPT‑Synopsys, an AI model that helps design semiconductor chips.
Why It Matters
By automating parts of the design flow, the model can shorten development time, lower costs, and enable faster chip releases, which can affect device makers and the broader tech industry.
What Happens Next
OpenAI will train the model on Synopsys tools while customers begin using it; revenue will be shared, and traditional verification will remain essential to ensure design reliability.
