Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Indian pilot Smit Machchhar for stopping a major disaster on a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Modi stated that the captain used great patience and courage to prevent a tragedy comparable to the September 11 attacks.

The Cockpit Incident

On Wednesday, the flight's co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain with a knife inside the cockpit of the Boeing 737 MAX 8. This triggered a violent struggle that caused the aircraft to drop steeply over northern Saudi Arabia. Flight tracking data shows the plane lost thousands of feet in less than a minute during the sudden descent. An Israeli passenger also helped overpower the attacker during the struggle.

Official Reactions and Background

Speaking at an event for the Union Public Service Commission, PM Modi mentioned he had spoken with the pilot's parents, Bhupendra Bhai and Geeta Behen, along with his wife, Sonal Behen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the captain for extraordinary bravery. Captain Machchhar is originally from Mumbai's Ghatkopar East area, worked in Dubai, and previously spent 11 years with SpiceJet. The Indian embassy confirmed he is recovering from surgery at a hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Context

Major commercial aircraft cockpit security protocols have been tightened significantly worldwide over the past two decades following past hijacking incidents. Aviation safety rules rely heavily on strict door-locking mechanisms and crew coordination to manage sudden onboard emergencies. Pilot unions and international agencies routinely monitor such cockpit security measures to prevent unauthorized access or internal security threats.
