Probe Team Change
A senior police officer handling the sexual assault case involving 'Gem Granites' R. Veeramani has asked to step down from the team. V.V. Geethanjali, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Crime Against Women and Children under the Greater Chennai Police, submitted a request to recuse herself from the all-woman Special Investigation Team. She cited her past involvement in the initial inquiry of this matter during her time with the Central Crime Branch, which took place under the supervision of the then Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun.
Demand For CBI Transfer
Following this development, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy urged the Tamil Nadu government to hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation. In a social media statement, he argued that a transfer is necessary because high-ranking police officials might have played a part in watering down or closing the case prematurely.
Context
Special Investigation Teams are often formed by police departments to handle sensitive cases with focused attention and specialized personnel. When officers on such panels have prior links to early stages of an inquiry, they frequently step aside to maintain transparency and avoid conflicts of interest.
