Dr Gopinath Sadhu grew up wanting to teach high school mathematics in his village, where he gave tuition to support his family and strengthen his own basics. After completing his Master's degree at Burdwan University, he shifted toward research and cracked both the CSIR-UGC NET JRF and GATE exams in the year 2019. He then pursued his doctorate at IIT Guwahati, where he learned how to handle failed experiments and setbacks. Today, he works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, focusing on mathematical biology and mathematical oncology.
Interdisciplinary Future
Interdisciplinary science fields like computational biology and mathematical oncology hold massive potential because they combine multiple subjects to answer complex questions. Dr Sadhu advises students to build deep conceptual clarity, focus on consistent practice rather than memorization, and learn how to communicate across different scientific fields. His current postdoctoral work at IISc receives support from the Param Hansa Centre for Computational Oncology, directed by Prof Mohit Kumar Jolly. Looking ahead, he aims to help turn India into a global hub for combining mathematics, biology, and medicine while mentoring young scientists.
Context
Mathematical oncology uses mathematical models and computer simulations to understand how tumors grow, spread, and respond to treatments. This approach helps researchers predict cancer behavior and design better therapies alongside traditional laboratory experiments.
