HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year term starting on October 27, 2026. Bagchi is moving from his current role as the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

Leadership Transition

Bagchi will take over the top position from Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose term finishes on October 26 and who will not get a reappointment.

Approvals

The Reserve Bank of India gave its formal approval for Bagchi to lead the bank for three years. Following this, the bank's board of directors held a meeting on October 1 and approved making him an Additional Director starting October 2, based on a recommendation from the Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee. The final appointment as MD and CEO also needs approval from shareholders under the rules of the Companies Act, 2013.

Context

Major private banks in India must secure central bank approval for leadership changes to ensure regulatory compliance and stability in the financial sector. Such planned successions help large institutions maintain steady operations as they transition between top executives.
