Eight students from Winners Academy, a private coaching centre in Alandi, Pune, died after being swept into the sea at Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday afternoon. The students were part of a 48‑member group that included 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers travelling on an educational excursion. The beach falls under the Dighi Marine police station. Police said eight boys entered the water to swim and were pulled into deeper water by strong undercurrents. Local residents and rescuers launched a search, pulling seven bodies out of the sea. A missing boy was found later that evening, bringing the total recovered to eight. All eight bodies were taken to the primary health centre at Borli, where they were declared dead. A senior police officer confirmed that volunteers retrieved the bodies before handing them to medical staff. ## Context Diveagar beach is a popular spot for school and college outings in Maharashtra, but strong currents have caused accidents before. The tragedy underscores the need for strict safety checks during water activities on educational trips.
