India will start their 2027 ICC World Cup campaign against defending champions Australia on October 7 in Cape Town. Before the main group stage begins with 12 teams, a Super Series preliminary round for the three lowest-ranked qualified teams will start on October 2 in Windhoek, Namibia. India will head to South Africa in advance to play the hosts in a six-match ODI series at venues including Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Centurion.

Group Matches

India is placed in Group A alongside Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and Qualifier A. After playing Australia, India will face Pakistan on October 10 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The team then takes on Afghanistan on October 14 at Centurion, plays Qualifier A at Bloemfontein on October 17, and finishes the group stage against Zimbabwe on October 24 at the Mosi-oa-Tunya Stadium near Victoria Falls. Group B consists of South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Qualifier B.

Tournament Format

The tournament is co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, marking the World Cup's return to Africa since 2003. ICC chair Jay Shah stated that the three host nations will provide an unforgettable stage for the teams. A new Super 7 phase has been introduced where teams will not carry forward group stage points. The semi-finals will be played at Cape Town and Centurion, and the final will take place at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on November 21.

Context

Tournaments held across multiple countries often require extensive advance travel and acclimatization for visiting teams. The 50-over World Cup remains one of the premier events in international cricket. International cricket schedules are planned years in advance by governing bodies to accommodate bilateral series and global events.
