Jaime Munguía has defended his WBA super-middleweight title by a unanimous decision against unbeaten Russian challenger Nikita Zon at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The Fight
The 30-year-old Mexican champion won with three ringside judges scoring the bout 116-112 and 117-111 twice. Munguía entered the ring as an 18-1 favorite, but Zon nearly pulled off an upset in an extraordinary sixth round. Zon landed a heavy barrage of punches that rocked Munguía and left him barely able to stay upright. Referee Tony Weeks stepped in during the sixth to separate the fighters, giving Munguía crucial seconds to recover before the champion fought back in the later rounds.
Fighter Reaction
Speaking through a translator after the bout, Munguía admitted he got carried away after hurting Zon in the sixth and let his guard down. He gave himself a six or seven out of 10 for his performance and noted that things got complicated in the ring. Munguía previously lost to Canelo Álvarez by a unanimous decision in May 2024 and held a professional record of 46 wins with two losses and 35 knockouts before this match. Zon entered the fight with an unbeaten record of 12 wins, no losses, and one draw, fighting outside Russia for the first time.
Main Event Buildup
The event also features the main title clash where Canelo Álvarez challenges Christian Mbilli for the 168lb WBC super-middleweight title in Riyadh. Álvarez is fighting for the first time since his loss to Terence Crawford. Mbilli entered the ring first wearing a black t-shirt and red trunks, followed by Álvarez who walked out with his team and recording artist Tito Double P. National anthems played for Saudi Arabia, France for Mbilli, and Mexico for Álvarez, with referee Hector Afu officiating.
Context
Super-middleweight boxing matches span a 168-pound weight class and often feature top fighters competing for major governing body belts like the WBA and WBC. Riyadh has recently hosted several major international boxing events featuring world champions and top contenders. Unanimous decisions occur when all three judges score the bout in favor of the same fighter at the end of all scheduled rounds.
