US Midterm Elections Reach Final Weekend As Control Of Congress Hangs In Balance

The final weekend of the US midterm campaign brings intense legal battles and a record-breaking early turnout as voters prepare to head to the polls. ## What Happened Voters will cast their ballots on Tuesday, November 3, to decide the balance of power in Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's term. The election features races for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats, and 36 governorships. Republicans currently hold a narrow 53-47 majority in the Senate along with a small lead in the House. To win the Senate chamber, Democrats must defend all of their current seats while flipping at least four new ones. Legal disputes have also flared up in the final days, with the Trump administration pushing a criminal inquiry into the Alaska Senate race and signaling plans to ask the Supreme Court to weigh in on mail-in ballots in California. Meanwhile, divisions among Michigan Democrats have created further uncertainty in another crucial Senate contest.

Campaign Trail

Candidates across both major parties spent Saturday traveling extensively to secure final votes. President Donald Trump remained at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida before scheduled Sunday stops in Kansas and Iowa. Trump also announced a tele-rally on Truth Social to back several Republican candidates in Ohio, including gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Senator Jon Husted, Representative Mike Carey, and congressional hopefuls Eric Conroy and Derek Merrin. This event marks the second of six nationwide rallies hosted by Trump to support party candidates.

Context

Midterm elections typically serve as a referendum on the sitting president's policies and often see the party in power lose seats in Congress. Record early voting figures indicate high public engagement in a cycle that could significantly alter legislative oversight on key issues like immigration, trade, and foreign policy.
