Jio Platforms shares have surged nearly 28% from their issue price of ₹1,119 since making their market debut on Wednesday, 28 October. This strong entry took its market value to nearly ₹13.18 lakh crore, making it India's second-most valuable listed company after Reliance Industries. The listing has intensified comparisons between Jio and established rival Bharti Airtel, with experts weighing the growth potential of Jio against the steady track record of Airtel.

Market Views

Jio's IPO attracted bids for 22.19 times the shares on offer, and its market debut has put the spotlight on the wider telecom sector. Gaurav Arora, Head of Research at SAHI, noted that Jio's initial valuation of around ₹10.3 lakh crore places it among India's top five companies from day one. He pointed out that Jio serves 53 crore subscribers with an average revenue per user of around ₹215 per month. Meanwhile, Ratiraj Tibrewal, Director at Choice Capital Advisors, described Jio as a scale-and-growth play driven by its 5G network, fixed wireless access, and digital ecosystem. In contrast, Tibrewal called Bharti Airtel a quality-and-returns choice backed by a premium postpaid mix, strong cash flows, and disciplined capital allocation.

Context

Indian telecom companies have grown rapidly through digital expansion and rising data consumption, though investors must balance high infrastructure costs against average revenue per user levels. Market experts advise looking closely at earnings growth, return ratios, and future tariff changes before making investment choices in the sector.
