Four workers died after entering a food-waste tank for cleaning at a private hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas road in Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 2026.

The Incident

The incident took place around 11 p.m. on Saturday when two workers entered the waste chamber and collapsed. Two more workers then went inside to rescue their colleagues, and all four individuals lost their lives. Authorities suspect the deaths were caused by a poisonous gas leak and a slippery slug inside the chamber.

Official Response

Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh confirmed that four people died after entering the tank. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that police personnel and hotel staff recovered all four bodies by breaking open the chamber, and some people sustained minor injuries during the rescue operation. Police identified three of the deceased as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin Wahid, and Manoj Meena, while an ongoing probe investigates the exact circumstances.

Context

Incidents involving manual cleaning of underground waste chambers and septic tanks often highlight severe workplace safety risks in urban commercial spaces. Proper safety gear and ventilation protocols are legally mandated for confined-space tasks to prevent toxic gas exposure. Local authorities typically examine whether basic safety equipment was provided to workers before such operations began.
