Mohammad Kaif Questions Team Selection and Bowling After Fourth T20 Loss

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticized the team management's selection policies and bowling performance following a heavy defeat in the fourth T20 match against New Zealand, even though India has already secured the series. Kaif noted that the team relies solely on aggressive batting while the bowlers face heavy criticism, calling this approach a bad habit that will cause future trouble. He questioned why young player Vaibhav Suryavanshi remained on the bench during a dead rubber after the series was already won, and pointed out that keeping Ishan Kishan on the field just for wicketkeeping when he was not fully fit wasted a chance to play the youngster. Kaif also criticized the team management for keeping wicket-taking spinners like Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav on the bench while fast bowlers concede too many runs across all matches, asking if the management sits out mystery spinners simply to keep batting depth down to number eight. Meanwhile, New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has shown great form in the series with one century and two half-centuries in the first four games, scoring 70 or more runs in nearly every match to reach 276 total runs so far. Phillips now has a chance to break the world record for most runs in a bilateral T20 series during the upcoming fifth match, needing only 56 more runs to surpass the record of 331 runs set by England player Phil Salt against West Indies in 2023. Pakistan player Mohammad Rizwan sits second with 316 runs, Sahil Chauhan is third with 297 runs, and Mark Chapman is fourth with 290 runs. Phillips also needs 24 runs to become the third batter to score 300-plus runs in a T20 series of five or more matches, and 15 runs to break Mark Chapman's record for most runs in a T20 series for New Zealand. India won the first three matches to claim the series, while the visiting team looks to build confidence before the five-match ODI series starts on November 4, which will feature Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Context
Bilateral cricket series often feature heavy squad rotations once a team secures an unassailable lead, giving team management a chance to test bench strength. At the same time, individual batting records in multi-match bilateral series draw significant attention as players close in on milestone run tallies.
