India is set to build a new high-speed rail line linking the national capital all the way to Assam. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval of this northern route while speaking at the launch of the country's second Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Varanasi-New Delhi route on Saturday. He stated that ticket prices for these fast trains will stay lower than flight charges so that middle-class and poor families can easily afford them.

Route Details

The planned rail link will feature six official stops along its path: Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, and Siliguri. Travel times will be cut down sharply, with the trip from Delhi to Agra taking about 59 minutes and the journey to Kanpur lasting roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes. Passengers going from Delhi to Lucknow will reach their destination in 2 hours and 12 minutes, while the run between Varanasi and Delhi will require about 3 hours and 33 minutes. Shorter stretches will also see quick transit times, with Varanasi to Lucknow taking 1 hour and 21 minutes and Varanasi to Patna finishing in about an hour.

Extension and Reaction

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared that the route was originally meant to stop at Siliguri. Following a written request and a meeting with the Railway Minister in July, officials agreed to stretch the path into the Northeast. Sarma noted that the full ride from Guwahati to Delhi could take under eight hours. He added that better transit options will support local businesses and help bring high-tech industries to the region.

Context

This project forms part of a wider national push to expand high-speed rail networks, which also includes the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. The government aims to build modern transport links to boost economic growth and cut travel times between major cities across the country.
