The Greater Chennai Corporation will build 36 new parks and 11 new playgrounds as part of a major state urban development plan.
Project Details
The 36 parks will cost about ₹34.45 crore, while the 11 playgrounds will cost ₹9.52 crore. Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran stated that the civic body is currently working on the tendering process, and actual work will start once that is finished. These projects form part of the first phase of the Chief Minister's Integrated Urban Development Mission for the years 2026 to 2031.
Locations
The new recreational spaces will spread across nine zones in the city. These zones include Alandur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur. Specific spots chosen for parks include the Kathipara-airport entrance in Alandur, areas along EVR Periyar Salai and Nelson Manickam Salai in Anna Nagar, and parts of Sholinganallur. Meanwhile, the 11 playgrounds will come up in Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Kodambakkam, and Sholinganallur.
Context
These local projects fit into a much larger five-year urban mission across Tamil Nadu with a total budget of ₹1.5 lakh crore. The wider mission sets aside ₹2,000 crore specifically for urban greening and open spaces to help cities grow while keeping enough room for public recreation.
