Indian Railways is advancing its high-speed rail network by manufacturing the country's inaugural bullet train, designated as the B28, at the Aditya Plant operated by BEML in Bengaluru. This transit system is intended for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, where construction on the 508-kilometre route is currently active with a target to launch the priority section by August 2027.
Train Specifications
The eight-coach rake measures roughly 202 metres in length and divides evenly into four motor cars and four trailer cars. It achieves a peak test velocity of 280 kilometres per hour while running commercially at 249 kilometres per hour. Seating capacity reaches nearly 557 travelers across seven standard-class cars with three-by-two seating and one executive-class car with two-by-two seating. The design permits coupling two separate eight-train sets to create a 16-coach formation if future travel demand rises. Power comes through a 25 kilovolt single-phase alternating current traction system alongside a regenerative braking setup that captures energy during stops to boost overall efficiency. Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations shaped the aerodynamic nose and exterior body profile to cut air resistance, limit tunnel pressure waves, and reduce sonic booms during fast travel.
Passenger Amenities
Inside the cars, an automated system delivers journey updates via liquid crystal displays in English, Hindi, and local languages alongside audio announcements. Travelers can use emergency talk-back units placed in cabins and vestibules to reach crew members directly during urgent situations. A wireless infotainment network also supplies preloaded entertainment options. Accessibility features include floor heights matching platform levels, retractable door steps to close the gap for stepping inside, wheelchair-friendly doors, dedicated seating, specific washroom layouts, and Braille signage for visually impaired passengers. Twin climate control units per car regulate indoor temperature and humidity, while acoustic insulation, damping coatings, and bogie covers lower cabin noise.
Context
This project represents India's push toward advanced mass transit infrastructure, utilizing domestic manufacturing capabilities to build rolling stock locally. The Union Budget for 2026-27 also outlined plans for seven additional bullet train corridors across the nation, signalling a broader shift toward high-speed rail connectivity.
