Supplies to the power sector also went up by 19 percent to reach 57.1 million tonnes, while overall monthly supplies surged 19 percent to hit 70.3 million tonnes. Both power sector supplies and overall supplies reached record highs for a single month. The company loaded an average of 310 rakes per day for the power sector during October.
Challenges Overcome
Coal India stated that production and mining activity recovered well after slowing down due to monsoons. The company noted that this performance was important because power plants needed more coal stocks to meet rising power demand. Operations faced challenges from unseasonal rainfall, Puja festivities, and a cyclone.
Context
Coal plays a major role in meeting India's electricity needs, as thermal power plants depend heavily on a steady supply of fuel to generate power. Mining companies often face operational hurdles during heavy monsoon months and weather disruptions, requiring them to ramp up production later to rebuild national stockpiles.
