Protest Plans and Police Action
Cockroach Janata Party is scheduled to hold a protest at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Park, featuring demonstrations starting at 4 PM near gate number 6. Mumbai police have denied permission for the protest, citing noise, traffic, and emergency vehicle movement in the residential area, alongside a 2013 Bombay High Court order and a 2016 Maharashtra state decision designating the ground as a silent zone with limited non-sporting events. Security is heavily tightened around Shivaji Park and Dadar railway station, with entry points closed, barricades set up, and extra police forces deployed. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, who was briefly detained by police near Marine Drive before being released, insists the agitation will proceed at Shivaji Park despite the denied permit.
Javed Akhtar Social Media Debate
Senior writer Javed Akhtar sparked a social media debate by posting on X that he is glad local residents are objecting to the CJP protest noise and asked if they would show the same energy against political party rallies at the park. When a user accused him of playing a balancing game, Akhtar replied to user Shahid Khalid and later responded to another user who called him an idiot. Another user, Kripal Makwana, claimed Akhtar did not know the protest's real issue, prompting Akhtar to ask how protesting the Election Commission is automatically seen as protesting the government.
CJP Demands and Supporter Reactions
The protest demands the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar alongside criminal proceedings, an immediate stop to the special intensive revision process of voter lists with the restoration of the January 2025 electoral rolls, and the scrapping of the 2023 election commissioner appointment law to create a transparent system involving civil society. Musician and singer Vishal Dadlani supported the movement in a video, urging Mumbaikars to gather at gate number 6. Meanwhile, local residents and associations wrote to Mumbai police demanding action to stop the protest due to disturbance to peace, daily life, schools, and hospitals near the ground, suggesting Azad Maidan as an alternative venue.
Context
Chhatrapati Shivaji Park is a prominent public ground in Mumbai historically used for major political rallies and sports, making balancing public gatherings with local residential peace a frequent administrative challenge. The Election Commission of India operates as an independent constitutional body responsible for conducting elections across the country, making its rules and voter list revisions subjects of public debate.
