An HbA1c level of 5.9 percent and a fasting blood sugar of 104 milligrams per deciliter fall in the prediabetes range, according to medical experts. This means blood sugar is higher than normal, but it does not mean the person has diabetes. Dr Aarti Ullal, a physician and diabetologist at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel, advises people not to panic or ignore these numbers.

Lifestyle Changes

Timely lifestyle changes can prevent prediabetes from turning into diabetes by addressing individual risk factors. Dr Ullal recommends cutting down on refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks, sweets, and processed foods. Instead, people should eat more vegetables, whole grains, pulses, proteins, and high-fibre foods. Regular physical activity like walking after meals and strength training helps improve how the body handles insulin. For those who are overweight, even a small amount of weight loss helps.

Testing And Follow Up

Since HbA1c shows average blood sugar over the past three months, Dr Ullal suggests repeating the test after three months to see if lifestyle changes are working. Fasting glucose can be checked at the same time. If numbers stay in the prediabetes range despite healthy habits, a person should consult a diabetologist for further tests like a lipid profile, blood pressure check, and review of family history. Early medical advice is also necessary if readings go up or diabetes symptoms appear.

Context

Prediabetes serves as an early warning sign that gives individuals a chance to lower their risk of developing full type 2 diabetes through daily habits. Making small, steady changes to diet and physical activity can often bring blood sugar levels back down to a healthy range.
