Indoor Air and Chemicals
Dr Rajiv Chhabra, chief of the paediatric department at Artemis Hospital in Gurugram, notes that indoor air quality is affected by dust, cooking smoke, incense, mosquito repellents, and strong fragrances. Kitchens need good ventilation and exhaust fans during cooking, while dusty surfaces must be wiped regularly. Dr Chhabra also advises storing detergents, disinfectants, pesticides, and other chemicals in their original containers out of children's reach, and warns never to mix cleaning chemicals because doing so can produce dangerous fumes.
Food, Sleep, and Safety
Children's health is shaped by easy access to healthy food, so parents should keep fruits, vegetables, pulses, and whole grains within reach while limiting sugary drinks and processed snacks. Good sleep also helps children grow and fight infections, which means bedrooms should be quiet and dark at night with no screen time before bed. Furthermore, adults must keep medicines, batteries, sharp objects, and small items away from children to prevent choking or swallowing hazards.
Context
Experts often focus on indoor home environments because young children spend a large portion of their early days inside houses rather than outdoors. Simple daily adjustments to air flow, food placement, and chemical storage can significantly lower everyday health risks without requiring a complete home makeover.
