Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the gold medal in the women's 75kg category at the Asian Games on Friday. She defeated Ziyi 5-0 in the final to join Mary Kom as the only Indian women boxers to win an Asian Games gold medal. The victory came on her birthday and followed a tough path through an eight-boxer draw. She started with a 5-0 win over Korea's Seong Su-yeon in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, she secured a close 3-2 split-decision win against reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan after losing two rounds in that bout. Speaking to broadcasters after her win, Lovlina said her target this year was to change the colour of her Asian Games medal and that hearing the national anthem is always special.

Coach Assessment

Indian women's boxing head coach Santiago Nieva noted that the Chinese opponent aimed for strong punches. He explained that the key for Lovlina was to work on her punches from a distance and use her side-step left hook when the opponent came forward. Although things got a bit messy in the final seconds of the third round, Nieva stated that Lovlina had already done enough to win. Over recent years, Lovlina has claimed the Asian title in 2022, a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, and the 2023 World title in the 75kg division. In 2024, she lost in the quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics to Li Qian, and this year she lost the CWG final to Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree.
