Engine and Variants

BMW has introduced the new F 450 R street-naked motorcycle, which replaces the discontinued G 310 R as the starting point for the brand's roadster lineup. It uses a 420cc parallel-twin engine that puts out 48hp at 8,750rpm and 43Nm of torque at 6,750rpm, paired with a six-speed gearbox. The European WLTP test cycle puts fuel consumption at 3.8 litres per 100km or 26.3kpl. Buyers can choose from four variants: Base, Exclusive, M Sport, and M Sport with Innovation Package. The Exclusive version adds a bidirectional quickshifter and adjustable sport suspension. M Sport models get a customisable Dynamic Pro riding mode and a special TFT layout, while the top-end Innovation Package variant adds an Easy Ride Clutch.

Size and Features

Standard seat height sits at 790mm, though a low seat accessory drops it to 775mm and a high sport seat raises it to 810mm. BMW states that a slim contour under the seat helps riders reach the ground more easily. The bike weighs 175kg ready to ride, making it 3kg lighter than the F 450 GS. Every variant includes a 6.5-inch TFT screen with Bluetooth for calls, music, and navigation, plus a USB-C port, heated grips, and full-LED lights. Standard safety aids include Rain, Road, and Dynamic riding modes, ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and engine drag torque control. Shift Assistant Pro comes standard on all versions except the base model, where it is sold as an add-on accessory.

Differences from GS

While the F 450 R shares its engine, tubular steel frame, and KYB suspension parts with the F 450 GS, it differs in setup and road focus. The GS uses a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel with 180mm suspension travel, whereas the F 450 R uses 17-inch wheels at both ends and road-tuned suspension with 140mm of travel. The roadster also features an underbelly exhaust instead of the high-mounted setup found on the GS.

Context

Motorcycle manufacturers often share a single engine and frame platform across multiple body styles to save development costs while catering to different riding styles like adventure touring or street riding. Naked roadster motorcycles are designed primarily for paved city streets and twisty roads, lacking body panels for a raw look and agile handling. Earlier report (2026-10-02 22:31): BMW Motorrad has introduced the new F 450 R street-naked motorcycle, which replaces the discontinued G 310 R as the brand's entry-level roadster.

Design and Engine

The bike shares its platform and 420cc parallel-twin engine with the F 450 GS. This engine delivers 48 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm. Its styling is inspired by the S 1000 R, featuring sharp bodywork and a bracket-shaped LED daytime running light, along with an underbelly exhaust system instead of the GS's high-mounted unit.

Parts and Variants

Stopping power comes from a 310mm front disc paired with a Brembo four-piston monobloc caliper, alongside a 240mm rear disc. The tubular steel frame uses the engine as a stressed member, matched to a 43mm KYB USD fork and KYB monoshock. Standard features across all four variants—Base, Exclusive, M Sport, and M Sport with Innovation Package—include a 6.5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity, heated grips, full-LED lighting, and a USB-C port. The top model adds the Easy Ride Clutch for clutchless pull-aways and gear changes when paired with the standard bidirectional quickshifter, which is optional on the base variant.

Context

Entry-level motorcycles with mid-size displacement engines help luxury brands attract younger riders who want high performance without jumping straight to heavy liter-class machines. Sharing platforms across different styles, like a roadster and an adventure bike, helps manufacturers keep production costs down while expanding their model range.
