Actor Inde Navarrette hosted the latest Halloween episode of Saturday Night Live, delivering what reviewers call the strongest show of the season so far. The cold open featured Tom Hanks returning as the confusing character David S Pumpkins alongside his skeleton helpers Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan. James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump, who interrupted the sketch and made bizarre remarks about admiring men's asses. Trump was joined by rapper Nicki Minaj, played by Saidah Belo-Osagie, and former press secretary Katie Zacharia, played by Veronika Slowikowska, who fumbled the traditional sign-off line. During her opening monologue, Navarrette distanced herself from her horror role in Obsession and referenced remarks made by a previous host, Shane Gillis. Cast members then showed off their costumes on stage, including Marcello Hernández as a TSA agent, Kam Patterson dressed as Elizabeth Holmes, and Jeremy Culhane in a Wolverine outfit. The episode featured several digital shorts and sketches. A tour of the Ghosts of the Queen Mary included Sarah Sherman as a wealthy heiress and Hernández and Navarrette as chatty child ghosts. A Delta Airlines commercial introduced Delta Disruptive, a seating area meant exclusively for unruly passengers. In a game show sketch, Belo-Osagie played a married lesbian at a deli while Navarrette, Jane Wickline, and Sherman played male contestants. A Midnight Matinees short titled The Inventor featured Navarrette as the widow of an eccentric inventor. She discovers a cute robot helper named PD 44 left behind in the workshop. Six years later, after deciding to date again, she brings a new beau home and learns that the name stands for Penis Destroyer 44, leading to a gruesome twist. Another sketch took place behind the scenes of a Mexican telenovela called El Corazón No Siente, where Navarrette and Hernández played leads trying to work a Sprite product placement into their scene while improvising absurd dialogue. Weekend Update featured Colin Jost discussing political headlines and Michael Che joking about election turnout in Israel. Ben Marshall appeared as Pennywise the Clown to promote a startup called WeAllFloat.AI, and Mikey Day returned as Drunk Uncle. Drunk Uncle ranted about various topics before being joined by Milwaukee Brewers players Christian Yelich and Brice Turang alongside manager Pat Murphy, who brought out the World Series trophy. Other segments included a Paw Patrol parody and a dinner scene where Heidi Gardner played a professor who tries to ignore a heavy tray of plates falling on her head. Musical guest Gracie Abrams performed her second song of the night before the final curtain call.
Context
Saturday Night Live relies heavily on guest hosts, recurring characters, and topical political satire to structure its weekly live sketch comedy format. Halloween-themed episodes are a long-running seasonal tradition for the show, frequently featuring horror-parody shorts and festive cold opens.
