India defeated Malaysia 4-2 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Sunday to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Asian Champions Trophy.
The Match
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a hat-trick for the home side, finding the net in the third, thirty-third, and forty-first minutes. Malaysia put up a strong challenge in the first half, keeping the score level at halftime, and Akhimullah Anuar scored an equalizing goal for them in the twenty-fifth minute. India increased their pressure after the break, with Sukhjeet adding a field goal in the forty-third minute to extend the lead. Shello Silverius scored a late field goal for Malaysia in the final minute, but India held on for their fourth straight win in the tournament.
Team Status
India played the match without forward Abhishek, who injured his ankle during the warm-up. Coach Craig Fulton noted that losing a striker affected the team balance and forced changes in the midfield. Alongside India and Malaysia, Japan and South Korea have also qualified for the semi-finals from the six-team competition. India will face South Korea in their final round-robin match on Monday, while Malaysia will play Japan.
Context
India entered the tournament as strong favorites after winning the gold medal at the recent Asian Games, where they defeated Malaysia in the final. International hockey tournaments often use a round-robin group stage format to determine the top four teams that advance to the knockout semi-finals.
