Investors withdrew $3.6bn in funds from the cryptocurrency exchange Binance as the platform recovered from a $6.3bn theft on Thursday, which has been described as the biggest heist in history. Binance initially froze withdrawals to investigate the breach but started a phased reopening on Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, the platform had processed $4.6bn in withdrawals and $1bn in deposits, resulting in a net outflow of about $3.6bn, which represents 2.1% of its $171bn in total assets under management. These figures were confirmed in the company's latest proof of reserves snapshot.
Recovery And Response
Binance stated that withdrawal volumes have declined and are stabilising while deposit volumes remain substantial. In the first phase, the platform restored withdrawals for 15 networks and assets, including ethereum, USDT, and USDC tokens on the ethereum blockchain, alongside holdings on the BNB Smart Chain blockchain. Later on Sunday, trading in Dogecoin and Avalanche resumed. The platform said it had replenished 90% of the stolen amount, with the remaining 10% consisting of less liquid tokens that may take longer to acquire. Richard Teng, Binance's co-chief executive, confirmed the company is committed to covering the remaining 10% so users do not bear the financial impact. Binance set aside about $6.34bn of company funds to cover the losses, drawing from a secure asset fund for users, its futures insurance fund, and its own corporate treasury. Teng noted the breach was a complex attack involving a compromised laptop, malicious software designed to delete evidence, and additional points of breach.
Investigation And Suspects
The FBI confirmed that a North Korea-affiliated group called TraderTraitor was behind the hack. TraderTraitor is believed to be part of the Lazarus Group, which gained notoriety in 2014 when it was accused of hacking into Sony Pictures. The FBI stated it observed TraderTraitor actors converting stolen assets into ethereum and urged private sector entities to block transactions with addresses used by the group to launder the assets. US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday night that the US is still unsure who the culprits are and will talk to North Korea if they are confirmed to be responsible. North Korea has always denied involvement in these attacks. Following the news, bitcoin plunged nearly 5%, ethereum dropped nearly 6%, and BNB tumbled nearly 10%.
Context
Cryptocurrency exchanges hold vast amounts of digital assets for millions of users worldwide, making them prime targets for sophisticated state-backed cybercriminal groups. Security breaches of this magnitude highlight the ongoing vulnerabilities in digital asset infrastructure and prompt intense scrutiny from international law enforcement agencies regarding how stolen funds are laundered through decentralised finance networks.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance suffered a record $6.3bn cyberattack on Thursday, with investigations by the FBI pointing to North Korean state-backed hackers who compromised internal systems and drained customer accounts.

This incident is the largest cryptocurrency heist in history, exposing critical security vulnerabilities in centralised digital asset platforms. It demonstrates how state actors can leverage advanced cyberattacks to bypass standard financial safeguards, directly impacting market stability and causing major tokens like Bitcoin and Ethereum to drop sharply.
What Happens Next
Binance is executing a phased reopening of withdrawals and using its corporate reserves to reimburse users, while international law enforcement agencies work to trace and freeze the laundered assets across decentralised finance networks.
