Gold and silver prices have seen a sharp drop in international and domestic markets due to shifting global economic conditions and geopolitical factors. According to GoodReturns website data cited by Asianet News Telugu, the price of 24-karat gold for 10 grams stood at Rs 1,38,880 in Hyderabad and Vijayawada, marking a steep fall of Rs 3,880 compared to Friday. Meanwhile, 22-karat gold for 10 grams dropped by Rs 3,100 to reach Rs 1,27,300. Silver prices also plunged significantly, with a Rs 10,000 drop in a single day bringing a kilogram of silver down to Rs 2,00,000, which marks an 11-month low.

Causes And Market Pressures

Global conflicts and rising crude oil prices are driving inflation fears across countries. Higher oil costs increase transport expenses, pushing central banks to delay interest rate cuts and keep rates high. Additionally, strong US economic data, including higher-than-expected GDP growth and persistent inflation, signals that the US Federal Reserve will likely keep interest rates steady. With US Treasury bond yields strengthening, investors are moving money away from non-yielding gold and into fixed-income assets. Some central banks are also reviewing and selling their gold reserves to manage foreign exchange needs, creating extra selling pressure on the metal.

Context

Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset during times of war and political tension, but broader macroeconomic indicators like interest rates and currency strength frequently override this trend. When bond yields and interest rates stay high, investors prefer assets that generate regular income over precious metals.
