Cyclone Threat

Three states are on high alert as a fresh severe cyclonic storm named Murasu approaches the eastern coastline. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed government teams to stay ready for rescue work, warning that the system will likely strike near Bapatla on the morning of November 3 with winds reaching 110 kilometres per hour. India named this weather system Murasu, which translates to war drum, following the recent impact of Cyclone Arnab that brought winds up to 150 kmph during its landfall on October 28.

Rainfall And Damage Estimates

South and central coastal districts will see moderate to heavy showers on November 2, followed by widespread heavy to very heavy downpours on November 3 and 4 with isolated extremely heavy spells. Out of 20 mandals facing extremely heavy rainfall warnings, nine lie in Eluru district, five each in Krishna and NTR districts, and one in Bapatla. Early official projections suggest that powerful gusts might snap roughly 15,128 power poles across 12 districts, prompting authorities to position emergency equipment and personnel in vulnerable zones beforehand.

Neighboring State Measures

Tamil Nadu officials have ordered district collectors to activate all administrative machinery and report emergencies immediately to the State Emergency Operations Centre. Tiruvallur district faces heavy to very heavy rain warnings on November 1 and 2, while Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and the Nilgiris expect heavy showers. Meanwhile, Odisha disaster management minister Suresh Pujari urged residents not to panic as southern districts like Ganjam step up safety measures. Odisha continues search operations for 10 missing people after a landslide at hilltop Gidipabali village on the Ganjam-Kandhamal border, where two more bodies raised the death toll from the earlier Cyclone Arnab to six.

Context

Tropical storms frequently form over the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon months, bringing dangerous winds and heavy downpours to India's eastern coastline. State disaster management agencies routinely use early weather forecasts to evacuate low-lying settlements and preposition emergency repair crews before landfall occurs.
