Varun Beverages Ltd recorded a 28.7% year-on-year surge in consolidated volume to 354.4 million cases during the third quarter, driven by a 22.5% increase in India and a 39.9% jump in international markets. Consolidated revenue rose 33.2% to 6,607 crore rupees, beating expectations, while beverage realization per case grew 2.2%.

Margin Pressures

Higher packaging costs for preforms, shrink films, closures, and cans caused gross margins to shrink 334 basis points year-on-year to 53.1%. Elevated packaging expenses eroded nearly 300 basis points from Indian gross margins and 272 basis points internationally. Overall Ebitda margin dropped 140 basis points to 21.6%, while depreciation and finance costs jumped 34.5% and 53.5% respectively due to the acquisition of Twizza in South Africa and related debt funding. These cost pressures pulled the company stock down 5.5% on Friday.

Outlook and Strategy

Management expects gross margins to stabilize based on current input price trends, and plans to follow broader industry price hikes or trade spend cuts. The company has reduced the pack size of Sting from 300 ml to 250 ml while keeping carbonated soft drink prices unchanged. Varun Beverages plans a capital expenditure of 1,000 crore rupees for its India business and 90 to 100 million dollars for international capacity expansion in the next cycle, targeting 200,000 new retail outlets annually.

Context

Beverage bottlers often face margin compression when raw material costs spike, requiring a balance between sales volume growth and pricing strategies to protect profitability. Companies in this sector typically rely on extensive distribution networks and targeted product sizing to navigate shifts in consumer demand and input expenses.
