Market Shift
Australian shares dropped on Monday as heavy losses in the mining sector wiped out gains made by banks. The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.2 percent to 8,894.10 by 2343 GMT, following a 1.3 percent rise last week.
Sector Performance
Miners dropped 1.5 percent due to weak iron ore and copper prices. BHP slid 1.3 percent, and Rio Tinto fell 1.4 percent after an underground seismic event at its Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. The gold sub-index dropped 2.8 percent after bullion hit a one-year low. Consumer staples fell 1.9 percent, with major grocers like Coles down about 3 percent. Meanwhile, financials rose 0.5 percent, helped by a 1 percent advance by Westpac after the lender reported a marginal rise in full-year profit.
Rate Hike Worries
Investors are bracing for a possible fifth interest rate hike this year. Above-target inflation and Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock's hawkish comments last week led many economists to shift forecasts. Thirty of 32 economists polled by Reuters now expect the cash rate to rise to 4.85 percent at Tuesday's policy meeting. Across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand's S&P/NZX 50 index fell 1.3 percent to 12,922.20.
Context
Central banks adjust benchmark interest rates to manage inflation in the broader economy when price rises move above target levels. Financial markets often react quickly to expected policy shifts, affecting commodity prices and major stock indexes alike.
