Irish bookstores are stepping in to help readers in Britain get novels by Sally Rooney after her publisher stopped U.K. supplies due to complications over the author's support for a pro-Palestinian group. Publisher Faber said it could no longer distribute her books in the United Kingdom because it could not transfer U.K. earnings to the author after she planned to donate those proceeds to Palestine Action, which is banned in Britain.

Local Impact

Jenni Doherty, owner of Little Acorns Bookstore in Londonderry, has kept stocking the bestselling books using suppliers in the Republic of Ireland. Londonderry is part of the United Kingdom but sits next to the border with Ireland, allowing local shops to order stock through Irish distributors and send books to customers in Britain. Meanwhile, Kenny's Bookshop in Galway reported a tenfold increase in sales of her novels following the publisher's decision.

Faber called not being able to pass on earnings an unconscionable situation, making the decision in mid-October in agreement with Rooney. Palestine Action was banned by the U.K. government under anti-terrorism laws, making it illegal in Britain to belong to, support or finance the group. However, the group is not prohibited in Ireland, where Rooney lives, and Faber remains her publisher for areas outside Britain. The books themselves are not banned, and existing copies in British shops can still be sold, but stores cannot replenish them through normal U.K. distribution channels. The ban on Palestine Action is also being challenged by co-founder Huda Ammori, with Britain's Supreme Court scheduled to hear an appeal.

Context

Sally Rooney is an acclaimed Irish author whose novels have sold millions of copies internationally and gained a television adaptation. The current distribution hurdle highlights the complex legal intersections between international publishing contracts, domestic counter-terrorism laws, and cross-border retail supply chains.
