New Zealand will play their upcoming five-match one-day international series against India without batsmen Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman due to injuries. According to the New Zealand cricket board and NZ Herald - Sport, an MRI scan shows that Chapman needs two more weeks to heal his left hamstring. Meanwhile, Ravindra needs more time for his right shoulder to fully recover so he can field safely in white-ball matches, with team management choosing to protect him ahead of a test series later this month. Head coach Rob Walter noted that losing both players is a real setback for the team. Tim Seifert, who was originally picked only for the final two games, will now play the entire series after scoring 93 runs from 50 balls in the fifth T20 match in Hamilton. Henry Nicholls joins the squad for the first three games following his 13th List A century of 119 runs for Canterbury against the Wellington Firebirds. Dean Foxcroft replaces Nicholls for the last two games after finishing his matches against India A, and Matt Fisher will stay with the squad for the full series as an extra bowler.

Context

Cricket teams frequently adjust their squads to manage player workloads and protect recovering athletes ahead of major test matches. Injuries to key batters often open up temporary opportunities for domestic performers to prove themselves at the international level.
