Police inspector Dilip Puri was killed when a truck he stopped for suspected illegal liquor ran over him on the Indore‑Betul highway in Dewas district in the early hours of 1 November 2026. He was leading one of five police teams formed to track illicit liquor transport. The truck was seized and more than 1,800 litres of unrecorded liquor were recovered. A post‑mortem was carried out and a special investigation team was set up. The driver and two helpers fled after leaving the truck some distance away; a search for them is ongoing. Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said an FIR has been lodged. Puri, a 2007 sub‑inspector who joined the force that year and was posted in Dewas a few months ago, leaves a wife, daughter and son. The incident occurs amid a probe into the death of 13 people in two Dewas villages linked to spurious liquor. In the past week police arrested 11 people for making and selling counterfeit liquor. After the inspector’s death the district collector and SP were transferred. ## Reaction Opposition Congress leader Umang Singhar criticised Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, saying the liquor mafia acted without fear and demanding tougher action. He questioned why the Home Department had not stopped the illegal trade. ## Context Illegal liquor trade has repeatedly caused deaths in Madhya Pradesh, prompting periodic police raids and political scrutiny.
