Festive season look changes often include decorative contact lenses for Diwali, weddings, Christmas, and New Year celebrations. However, eye care experts warn that these items can damage your vision if they do not fit properly. The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye, and it has no blood vessels so it heals slowly. Even a small scratch on this part of the eye can turn into a serious infection.

Medical Safety and Buying Tips

Dr Ganesh Pillay, who serves as chief academic and research and regional COO at ASG Hospital Limited, points out that even zero-power decorative lenses are medical devices. A short medical check confirms if your eyes are healthy and measures your corneal size and shape because one size does not fit all eyes. A poorly fitting lens can scratch the cornea or block oxygen. Safe lenses come in sealed and branded packaging that shows the manufacturer details, batch number, expiry date, and lens parameters. Buyers should avoid loose or unlabelled lenses entirely.

Choosing and Using Lenses

People should pick soft, breathable lens materials and avoid very dark or large designs that cover the pupil, since they lower vision in dim party lighting. Daily disposables offer a clean choice for one-off events because you use a fresh pair each time. Buyers must purchase only from licensed opticians, eye hospital optical stores, or certified online sellers that ask for lens details. Street stalls, salons, festival pop-ups, and unverified social media sellers should be avoided. Unregulated lenses cause a higher risk of microbial keratitis, especially among young and first-time buyers. Users must wash hands before touching lenses, use fresh lens solution instead of tap water, never share lenses, and take them out before sleeping. If eyes turn red, painful, blurry, or sensitive to light, users must remove the lenses immediately and visit an eye doctor instead of using chemist drops.

Context

Decorative contact lenses are popular fashion accessories during festive seasons, but they carry real medical risks when bought without a prescription or professional guidance. Eye specialists frequently remind the public that novelty items placed directly on the eye require the same safety care as prescription corrective lenses.
