Indian stock markets closed the past week with strong gains, driven by widespread buying across major indices. The BSE Sensex rose by 1,335.7 points or 1.83 percent to end the week at 74,459.53 points. The National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 index climbed 453.10 points or two percent to reach 23,053.10 points.
Market Performance
Buying was especially heavy in the broader market compared to large companies. The Nifty Midcap-50 index closed with a weekly gain of 2.78 percent, while the Smallcap-100 index jumped 4.08 percent. Out of 30 Sensex companies, 25 shares ended in the green. Trent led the gainers with a surge of 11.02 percent, followed by Adani Ports up 8.22 percent, and Eternal rising 8.20 percent. On the losing side, Reliance Industries shares dropped 2.22 percent and TCS fell 1.27 percent over the week.
Upcoming Triggers
Looking ahead, investors will closely watch domestic manufacturing and service sector Purchasing Managers' Index figures alongside quarterly results from major firms. Upcoming corporate earnings include those from ITC, NSE India Limited, State Bank of India, Mahindra and Mahindra, Titan, and Tata Steel. Notably, this marks the first quarterly result for NSE since listing on the stock exchange. Vehicle sales numbers will also guide investor sentiment toward auto makers, while global factors like the West Asia crisis and rising crude oil prices continue to shape market moods.
Context
Stock market movements depend heavily on a mix of corporate financial performance, economic data releases, and global geopolitical events. Major indices like the Sensex and Nifty reflect the overall health of top listed companies in the country, while broader market indices show how smaller firms are performing.
