UPDATE - follow-up to 78-year-old man loses ₹61,000 after mobile phone theft on BMTC bus: M. Ramappa discovered the theft of his mobile phone on October 27 while riding a BMTC bus from Hosa Road to Majestic with his granddaughter. He had placed the phone in his upper shirt pocket before boarding at around 9:30 a.m.

The Financial Loss

After reaching the hospital in Siddapura, his daughter Malashree advised him to check his bank account because the device lacked a password and she had recently sent money for school fees. Ramappa visited his Naganathapura bank branch to find that ₹50,000 had left his account via a UPI transfer, followed quickly by an 11,000 rupee transaction.

Police Action

Following the unauthorised withdrawals, the family called the 1930 cybercrime helpline and Ramappa filed a formal complaint with the Electronic City police station.

Context

Public transport pickpocketing cases frequently turn into major financial crimes when unsecured smartphones grant thieves direct access to banking and payment apps. Leaving devices without lock screens makes unauthorized money transfers much easier for criminals who gain physical possession of a phone.
