Residents in Mysuru saw black tea served on the streets on Monday during a peaceful demonstration against recent price hikes for milk, curd, and bus travel.
The Protest
The Gandhadagudi Foundation organised the protest in front of the Old Deputy Commissioner's Office to oppose higher ticket rates for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses along with dearer dairy items. Foundation president Aryan Gandhadagudi stated that the latest revisions put an extra financial burden on ordinary families.
Price Breakdown
Mr. Gandhadagudi pointed out that the government raised the price of milk by 12 rupees per litre even though an earlier announcement mentioned an increase of only 8 rupees. He questioned where the extra 5 rupees goes if farmers receive 7 rupees from that 12-rupee hike. He also highlighted that the price of curd went up by a sharp 14 rupees per litre and demanded that authorities explain who gets this extra money.
Demands
The group asked the state government to cancel the price increases entirely. They argued that authorities must protect both dairy farmers by ensuring they get a fair price and consumers by preventing excessive costs.
Context
Public demonstrations against sudden utility and daily essential price hikes are a common form of civic dissent in urban centres across India. State-run transport corporations and dairy federations frequently adjust rates to manage operational costs, which often sparks immediate pushback from citizen groups and local foundations.
