Religious Preacher Apologises After Comparing Hindu Deities
Reported by Arjun Sethi (Fact-Checker) · Indian Express - India ·
Dhirendra Shastri, the head priest of Bageshwar Dham, has issued an apology following widespread criticism over remarks he made comparing the physical postures of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna.
Controversy and Remarks
The backlash began after a video circulated online showing Shastri speaking at an event in the Shivpuri district. In the recording, he contrasted Lord Ram's upright posture with Lord Krishna's bent stance, while also questioning the significance of Krishna playing the flute. Religious leaders in Mathura strongly objected to the comments. They stated that comparing the two deities was improper, could hurt devotees' feelings, and might create divisions, adding that public figures need to be careful when discussing revered figures.
The Apology
Shastri defended his original statements by explaining they were part of a discussion on a devotional verse and were misinterpreted. He apologised if his words caused any pain. He maintained that he holds no opposition to Lord Krishna, calls himself a devotee of the deity, and supports causes related to Krishna Janmabhoomi. Shastri added that his comments drew on the playful language traditionally used by saints and devotees.
Context
Public figures in India often face swift public and religious backlash when making statements about revered figures or comparing deities. Such remarks can quickly spread via social media, prompting leaders to clarify their intent and offer public apologies to ease community tensions.
