Top National Conference leaders have started talks with around twenty disgruntled legislators in Jammu and Kashmir who recently raised concerns over party functioning and figures close to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The group of unhappy lawmakers previously met at the Srinagar residence of party lawmaker Qaiser Jamsheed Lone on October 27.
Demands and Reactions
The dissenting lawmakers have presented a ten-point memorandum to party president Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah. Their demands include party reforms, the implementation of the 2024 election manifesto, and a push for the restoration of Statehood and special status. Specific objections were also raised regarding Chief Minister Abdullah's adviser and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. Despite the tension, several legislators who attended the October meeting have since defended their loyalty to the party, with Hilal Lone stating that their commitment goes beyond posts and positions, and Showkat Hussain Ganai clarifying that no lawmaker intends to bring down the government.
Context
Internal party disagreements often surface when elected representatives feel sidelined by a core group of advisers around a chief executive. Political groups in Jammu and Kashmir frequently balance governance duties with the broader public demand for the restoration of full Statehood and special administrative powers.
