AIADMK leader Palaniswami questions slow GST growth and project shifts in Tamil Nadu
Reported by Faizan Khan (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
UPDATE - follow-up to Palaniswami expresses concern over lower growth rate in Tamil Nadu's GST collections: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has raised fresh concerns after Tamil Nadu recorded a three percent growth in Goods and Services Tax collections last month, falling significantly behind the national average.
Concerns Raised
In a social media statement on Monday, Mr. Palaniswami linked the low tax revenue to rising inflation rates that exceed the national figure and the shifting of industrial projects to other states. He noted that economic progress in industries is necessary to create jobs, boost the Gross Domestic Production, and raise individual income levels.
Political Criticism
He also blamed the current TVK-led administration for ruining Guidance Tamil Nadu, the single-window investment promotion agency that was originally set up during Jayalalithaa's tenure as Chief Minister.
Context
Tax collections like the Goods and Services Tax serve as a primary indicator of economic activity and consumer spending within a state. When industrial growth slows down or factories move elsewhere, it directly impacts state revenues and local employment opportunities.
