PTC India reported a 28 percent drop in its consolidated net profit to Rs 159.10 crore for the September quarter. The company posted a net profit of Rs 222.05 crore in the same period of the previous financial year. Higher expenses caused the profit to fall. Total expenses went up to Rs 5,788.97 crore compared to Rs 5,287.25 crore in the July to September period of FY26. Total income rose to Rs 5,958.24 crore from Rs 5,585.21 crore in the year-ago period.
Growth and Drop
Trading volume grew by 24 per cent to 32.46 billion units on a standalone basis during the quarter. Manoj Kumar Jhawar, MD and CEO of PTC India Ltd, said trades across different tenures helped drive this growth. However, cross-border power from Bhutan dropped sharply because Bhutan needed more power domestically, which lowered trading income from that source.
Context
Power trading companies buy and sell electricity to balance supply and demand across different regions. Profits in this sector depend heavily on operating costs and external supply factors like cross-border agreements.
