Independent Candidates Could Decide Vizianagaram Municipal Poll Results
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·

Voting and Results
Independent candidates might emerge as kingmakers in the Vizianagaram municipal elections as candidates await the results on Tuesday. Polling concluded peacefully on Sunday for the mayor and corporator posts. The vote count for the Vizianagaram municipality will take place at Rajeev Stadium. Counting for the Nellimarla municipality is set at CKM junior college, while the Bobbili municipality votes will be counted at the Growth Centre.
Contest Details
A total of 169 candidates fought for 62 divisions in Vizianagaram. The NDA alliance and the YSRCP both fielded 62 candidates each. The remaining 45 candidates include members from Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party, and independents. Political analyst Elisetti Suresh noted that independent votes will matter most in close races between YSRCP and alliance candidates, where even 100 votes could alter the outcome given expected margins of 3,500 to 4,500 votes.
Local Reactions
Businessman Attada Chandu expressed confidence in the victory of his relative, Attada Varalakshmi, stating that voters turned away from major parties due to a lack of local development over many decades. Chitta Chandrasekhar Varma Raju, the A.P. Bhatrajula Sangham general secretary who ran in Ward-22, also expects to win by a decent margin. Meanwhile, mayor candidates from both sides sought support from independent corporator candidates because the race between TDP nominee Avanapu Bhargavi and YSRCP candidate Kolagatla Sravani is expected to be extremely tight.
Voter Turnout
Only 62.73 percent of the electorate cast their ballots in Vizianagaram. Out of 2.33 lakh registered voters, only 1,39,911 people exercised their right to vote. This low turnout has become a major point of worry for the competing candidates.
Context
Local body elections in municipal corporations often feature tight races where smaller parties and independent contenders hold disproportionate bargaining power if neither major camp secures a clear majority. Voter turnout in local elections frequently tracks lower than state or national general elections, heightening the impact of individual voting blocks.
