UPDATE - follow-up to Tigress released in Bengal's Buxa Tiger Reserve; plans afoot for three more by end of year: A young female big cat has been moved from Bihar to the Buxa sanctuary in West Bengal to help restart a local tiger group.

Official Presence

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attended the animal's release on Friday. Mr. Adhikari stated that three additional big cats will arrive in the sanctuary over the coming two months to aid both wildlife preservation and local travel trade.

Background Issues

Buxa received tiger reserve status in 1983, but the area has lacked resident big cats for years due to damaged habitats, land use shifts, and fewer animals to eat. Work to revive the sanctuary began in 2018 through a joint effort involving the West Bengal government, the National Tiger Conservation Authority, and the Wildlife Institute of India.

Monitoring Plans

Department officials confirmed that the newly arrived animal will undergo close tracking using radio signals, trail cameras, and direct field checks to watch her health and daily habits. Similar relocation projects are underway across a dozen reserves nationwide, though results have varied.

Context

Bringing animals from one reserve to another is a common method used by wildlife experts to rebuild populations in areas where local species have died out. The Sundarbans region in the same state already holds a separate population of one hundred big cats in its mangrove forests.
