A six-year-old girl's trip to the washroom helped trigger a chain of events on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when her mother heard loud noises and knocking from the cockpit door. Tali Manes alerted a flight attendant, and when the door opened, she saw a violent struggle and blood inside. Indian captain Smit Machchhar had been stabbed by his co-pilot, leaving no one flying the aircraft as it plunged from about 34,000 feet to 16,600 feet.
Passenger Response
A small group of passengers rushed to the front of the cabin after hearing screams for help and witnessing the plane lose control. Tali Manes helped tie up the co-pilot with a telephone cord while a dentist on board treated the injured captain. Machchhar later told Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video call that he managed to open the cockpit door himself despite his injuries so people could enter. Two off-duty pilots on the flight then took control, and the aircraft later made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Context
Sudden cockpit emergencies require immediate intervention by flight crews and passengers when standard controls are compromised. Commercial flights follow strict safety protocols during mid-air security incidents to regain aircraft stability and land at the nearest safe airport.
