Most mid-to-large Indian firms see losses and value drops in 2026

More than half of India's mid-to-large tier companies with a market value above 1,000 crore rupees have faced losses in 2026. Eight of these firms have lost more than half of their total market value in just nine months, pushing their worth below their five-year historical averages. These sharp drops have hurt investor confidence across the board. Strict rules from regulators, high costs for borrowing money, and shrinking profit margins have all played a part in these declines. At the same time, foreign investors have pulled out a large amount of money from Indian shares this year as global tensions grow.
Context
When foreign investors pull money out of Indian markets in large amounts, it usually puts downward pressure on stock indices like the Sensex and Nifty. High funding costs and tight profit margins make it harder for growing companies to expand their businesses and keep stock prices steady.
