The Congress party has appointed MLA Aradhana Misra Mona as its Uttar Pradesh unit chief and Saharanpur MP Imran Masood as working president, ahead of the state Assembly elections. Misra, who is the daughter of Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, takes over from Ajay Rai, who held the post since August 2023. Alongside these appointments, Congress President Mallikanjun Kharge named Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad as senior vice-presidents of the state unit. Meanwhile, Chaudhary Virendra Singh, the MLA from Pharenda, replaced Misra as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state Assembly, leaving Misra and Singh as the party's two MLAs in the 403-member House.

Social Balance

These leadership changes are designed to build a wide social coalition, featuring a Brahmin state president, a Muslim working president, an OBC senior vice-president in Devinder Nishad, and a Dalit senior vice-president in Alok Prasad. This setup mirrors the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula used by the party's INDIA bloc partner, the Samajwadi Party. The newly appointed state unit chief, Aradhana Misra, is a three-term MLA from Rampur Khas in Pratapgarh and marks the party's return to a Brahmin woman state chief after Rita Bahuguna Joshi held the post from 2007 to 2012. An MBA graduate, Misra entered electoral politics as a Block Pramukh before winning her Assembly seat in 2014, and she previously worked closely with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the 'Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon' campaign.

Regional Leaders

Working president Imran Masood brings a strong political presence from western Uttar Pradesh, where he won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Saharanpur after returning to the Congress fold. While Masood's elevation aims to secure Muslim votes in the western region, his recent public friction with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party contrasts with Misra's cordial ties with the SP leadership. Party insiders believe this dual approach will help broaden their social voter base while keeping channels open for seat-sharing talks ahead of the 2027 polls. Additionally, senior vice-president Devinder Nishad heads the party's fishermen unit, and Alok Prasad hails from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's home constituency of Gorakhpur.

Context

Uttar Pradesh remains one of India's most politically crucial states due to its massive share of parliamentary and assembly seats, making state-level leadership changes a high-stakes move for national parties. Regional alliances and caste arithmetic historically dictate electoral outcomes in the state, prompting parties to carefully balance upper-caste, OBC, Dalit, and minority representation in their organizational structures.
