UPDATE - follow-up to The Hindu releases documentary Gandhi for GenZ: The Hindu released a 35-minute documentary titled Gandhi for Gen Z on October 2, 2026. Editor Suresh Nambath and CEO L.V. Navaneeth launched the film alongside The Hindu Group Chairman N. Murali and Director N. Ram.

Documentary Details

The film examines student protests that took place at Jantar Mantar in June. These protests started because an examination paper was leaked and grew into a larger expression of youth worries in the current political climate. The documentary pairs archival footage of Mahatma Gandhi's life and historic sites like Kochrab Ashram and Sabarmati Ashram with scenes from the recent demonstrations.

Key Themes

The project highlights how protesting students used traditional methods like hunger strikes and non-violent actions. It also shows how the students connected Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar despite older political discourses that usually separate them. Police action against the protesters and the lack of retaliatory violence by the students further emphasized the role of ahimsa.

Interviews and Production

The film includes interviews with historian Ramachandra Guha, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, Saurav Das from Cockroach Janta Party, and Mirai Chatterjee from the Self-Employed Women's Association. N. Ram stated that the documentary is timely because it shows the real relevance of the freedom struggle and mass protest methods. The project took about three months to make and was led by digital business head Pradeep Gairola, directed by Shikha Kumari A., and edited by Naveen Kumar V., with support from the video team.

Context

Documentaries often use archival footage alongside contemporary events to draw parallels between historical movements and modern social issues. Media organizations frequently produce such films to document significant societal shifts and encourage public discussion on historical philosophies.
