UPDATE - follow-up to 33% overall to clear a subject, says CBSE; Clears confusion over passing criteria: The Central Board of Secondary Education states that Class 10 students need a total of 33 per cent marks combining internal and external tests to pass a subject for 2026-27. This addresses confusion caused by an earlier circular that mentioned a need for separate passing marks. Officials note that plans for separate passing criteria were withdrawn so all modifications can happen together later. Meanwhile, Class 12 students still need 33 per cent separately in both internal and external exams. The board will also release sample papers and marking schemes to guide schools.

Context

The board sets standardized rules and assessment structures for thousands of affiliated schools across the country. Clear grading guidelines help reduce confusion among students and teachers as they prepare for annual board examinations.
