Making school lunchboxes healthier for children does not require a complete meal overhaul or turning into a master chef. Clinical nutritionist Sakshi Lalwani suggests using small food changes to double a child's fibre and protein intake without altering the meals they already enjoy.

Lunchbox Food Swaps

Potato chips can cause midday energy crashes due to simple carbohydrates, processed starch, and refined oil. Roasted lotus seeds, known as makhana, or crisp roasted chickpeas offer the same crunch with added protein, fibre, and iron. Store-bought juices and drinks often contain high amounts of sugar and can be replaced with chilled, lightly salted buttermilk, berry and mint infused water, or nutraceutical milk mixes like AlphaKid. White bread digests quickly and raises blood sugar, making whole-grain wraps or millet and multigrain parathas better choices for steady brain energy.

Desserts and Cooking Methods

Dessert does not need to be entirely removed from lunchboxes. Dates, oats, and seeds can be blended into bite-sized energy balls, or almonds dipped in dark chocolate can provide healthy fats and antioxidants. When preparing food, using an air-fryer helps cut calories while keeping food crispy instead of deep-frying items into oil sponges. Traditional vegetable oils can also be replaced with low-absorption oils with high smoke points, such as olive, flaxseed, and rice bran oils.

Context

Small dietary changes in daily meals are a common nutritional strategy to improve children's long-term health without causing resistance from picky eaters. Nutritional guidance often focuses on replacing processed ingredients with whole foods that provide sustained energy for school activities.
