General Motors has shelved long-rumored plans to expand the Corvette brand into a broader lineup of electric vehicles, sedans, and SUVs. A report from GM Authority, citing sources inside the company, states that these potential spin-off models will no longer become a reality.

The Casualties

The most notable loss from this decision is a rumored Porsche Cayenne-fighting SUV that industry watchers have discussed for years. Rumors also pointed toward a possible four-door Corvette sedan, which now will likely never be built. Furthermore, while the current C8 Corvette already features two hybrid setups, upcoming electric-vehicle platforms from GM will not be used for any Corvette-badged models.

Reactions and Variety

Because GM never officially announced these expansion plans, the situation remains unclear, and Chevrolet representatives declined to comment when reached by Car and Driver. Meanwhile, the standard Corvette lineup still offers plenty of choices. The current C8 generation ranges from the base Stingray and Grand Sport to the Z06 and the powerful ZR1 variants, while Chevrolet is also working on the future C9 generation and has previewed upcoming designs with a concept car called the California Corvette.

Context

Automakers often consider expanding famous sports-car names into high-riding models to boost profits and sales volume, much like Porsche did with its SUVs. However, car companies must balance financial gains against the risk of angering traditional brand fans who prefer sports cars to remain pure. GM appears to have chosen to keep the Corvette focused strictly on its traditional performance roots.
